Amalek

Amalek son to Eliphaz and grandson to Esau

Gen 36:12  And Timna was concubine to Eliphaz Esau's son; and she bare to Eliphaz Amalek: these were the sons of Adah Esau's wife.

Gen 36:16  Duke Korah, duke Gatam, and duke Amalek: these are the dukes that came of Eliphaz in the land of Edom; these were the sons of Adah.

1Ch 1:36  The sons of Eliphaz; Teman, and Omar, Zephi, and Gatam, Kenaz, and Timna, and Amalek.

Amalek (Amelkites)

Was a nation described in the Hebrew Bible as a staunch enemy of the Israelites. The name "Amalek" can refer to the nation's founder, a grandson of Esau; his descendants, the Amalekites; or the territories of Amalek, which they inhabited.

Amalek came up against Israel

(Exo 17:8)  Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.

(Exo 17:9)  And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.

(Exo 17:10)  So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

(Exo 17:11)  And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

(Exo 17:12)  But Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

(Exo 17:13)  And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

(Exo 17:14)  And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

(Exo 17:15)  And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi:

(Exo 17:16)  For he said, Because the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.

What/Where exactly is Rephidim

One proposal places Rephidim in the Wadi Feiran, near its junction with the Wadi esh-Sheikh. Wadi Feiran was an oasis, which would explain the battle with the Amalekites in terms of a struggle for control of water sources. Another proposed location for Rephidim is in northwestern Saudi Arabia near the town of al-Bad, the ancient city of Midian.

Holding up hands Israel prevails

Moses said to Joshua "I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand" Exo 17:9, when it was used held up they prevailed but without it (God) they were defeated so it was God's will that they won the battle.

Jehovahnissi

The first word of the phrase is the Tetragrammaton יהוה, one of the names of God in Judaism. It is generally translated in English Bibles as "the LORD", Jehovah, or Yahweh.

The Septuagint translators believed nis·si′ to be derived from nus (flee for refuge) and rendered it "the Lord My Refuge", while in the Vulgate it was thought to be derived from na·sas′ (hoist; lift up) and was rendered "Jehovah Is My Exaltation".

In many modern Christian translations, such as the New International Version, the name is translated “the LORD is my banner."

Bad Seed

My own opinion but I believe this is why we have sin such as murder and such today it's the descendants of those tribe(s) continuing to battle against the Lord.

Perish forever

Num 24:20  And when he looked on Amalek, he took up his parable, and said, Amalek was the first of the nations; but his latter end shall be that he perish for ever.

Blot out remembrance of Amalek

(Deu 25:17)  Remember what Amalek did unto thee by the way, when ye were come forth out of Egypt;

(Deu 25:18)  How he met thee by the way, and smote the hindmost of thee, even all that were feeble behind thee, when thou wast faint and weary; and he feared not God.

(Deu 25:19)  Therefore it shall be, when the LORD thy God hath given thee rest from all thine enemies round about, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it, that thou shalt blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; thou shalt not forget it.

Root of them Against Amalek

Jdg 5:14  Out of Ephraim was there a root of them against Amalek; after thee, Benjamin, among thy people; out of Machir came down governors, and out of Zebulun they that handle the pen of the writer.

Saul destroys Amalekites

(1Sa 15:2)  Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.

(1Sa 15:3)  Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

(1Sa 15:4)  And Saul gathered the people together, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah.

(1Sa 15:5)  And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley.

(1Sa 15:6)  And Saul said unto the Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.

(1Sa 15:7)  And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until thou comest to Shur, that is over against Egypt.

(1Sa 15:8)  And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.

David's wives taken captive

(1Sa 30:1)  And it came to pass, when David and his men were come to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the south, and Ziklag, and smitten Ziklag, and burned it with fire;

(1Sa 30:2)  And had taken the women captives, that were therein: they slew not any, either great or small, but carried them away, and went on their way.

(1Sa 30:3)  So David and his men came to the city, and, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, were taken captives.

Amalekite informs David of Saul's death

(2Sa 1:5)  And David said unto the young man that told him, How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son be dead?

(2Sa 1:6)  And the young man that told him said, As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon his spear; and, lo, the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him.

(2Sa 1:7)  And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called unto me. And I answered, Here am I.

(2Sa 1:8)  And he said unto me, Who art thou? And I answered him, I am an Amalekite.

(2Sa 1:9)  He said unto me again, Stand, I pray thee, upon me, and slay me: for anguish is come upon me, because my life is yet whole in me.

(2Sa 1:10)  So I stood upon him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he was fallen: and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my lord.

Did Amalekite's originate from Amalek

Gen 14:7  And they returned, and came to Enmishpat, which is Kadesh, and smote all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, that dwelt in Hazezontamar.

In Genesis 14:7, the "field of the Amalekites" is mentioned, though the person Amalek had not yet been born.

Some commentators explain this as a reference to the territory which was later on inhabited by the Amalekites. C. Knight elaborates this concept by making a comparison: one might say "Caesar went into France", though Gaul only later became known as France.

Amalekites dwell in the south

Num 13:29  The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan.

Lord directs into wilderness away from Amalekites

(Num 14:24)  But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.

(Num 14:25)  (Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley.) To morrow turn you, and get you into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.

(Num 14:26)  And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,

(Num 14:27)  How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.

(Num 14:28)  Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the LORD, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you:

Children of Israel defeated because they had turned against Lord

(Num 14:40)  And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised: for we have sinned.

(Num 14:41)  And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the LORD? but it shall not prosper.

(Num 14:42)  Go not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies.

(Num 14:43)  For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you.

(Num 14:44)  But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, departed not out of the camp.

(Num 14:45)  Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah.

There's several verses which mention the Amalekites, Midianites and the children of the east

Jdg 6:3  And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them;

Jdg 6:33  Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together, and went over, and pitched in the valley of Jezreel.

Jdg 7:12  And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the sea side for multitude.

Lord delivers children

(Jdg 10:11)  And the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Did not I deliver you from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines?

(Jdg 10:12)  The Zidonians also, and the Amalekites, and the Maonites, did oppress you; and ye cried to me, and I delivered you out of their hand.

(Jdg 10:13)  Yet ye have forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will deliver you no more.

Saul smote Amalekites

1Sa 14:48  And he gathered an host, and smote the Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of them that spoiled them.
